Philadelphia is one of the oldest towns in the state of
Tennessee. A fairly accurate estimate of the origin of the
town can be arrived at by the use of a map of Philadelphia
dated April, 1822. It is possible that the town was originally
laid off in the Fall of 1821.

In July, 1921, Edward W. Waller went to Philadelphia,
Tennessee to arouse interest in the organization and establishment
of a hosiery mill

An important part of the origin of the present day of Southern Railway took place in Philadelphia
Civil War
By September of 1863 the Union forces had been the
victim of a strong Confederate attack in the Battle of Chickamauga
and were bottled up in Chattanooga as a result of
the battle.
